Knoxville Becoming One of Tennessee’s Fastest Growing Cities

June 12, 2015 By Staff Writer

Knoxville CourthouseAccording to the U.S. census, Knoxville is currently growing faster than Chattanooga, but it still falls behind Nashville and Memphis, which are battling for the largest city in Tennessee. Since 2010, Knoxville saw a 3.09 percent growth; whereas Chattanooga saw a 2.93 percent increase.

With a population of 184,281, Knoxville’s growth has landed it at the 129th largest city in the United States. Chattanooga now ranks at number 141. Memphis and Nashville come in at number 23 and 25 respectively.

Currently, Nashville stands at the fastest growing of Tennessee’s four major cities, with a growth rate at around 6.71 percent. While Nashville is growing, Memphis is declining. Since 2010, Memphis’ population has dropped from 20th to its current 23rd in the country.

Driving the population growth is the employment outlook of Knoxville. Around a quarter of the employers in the surrounding area expect that they be adding employees in the near future. The cost of living also helps to increase Knoxville’s population. Knoxville stands at around 80% of the national average.

In addition to being one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S., The Brookings Institution released a list of the 300 largest metros in the world in January. Knoxville was listed as 99th. This ranking was based on a comparison of 2013 and 2014 numbers including GDP and employment changes.
